As someone that's just recently kicked his caffeine addiction (that's right, I'm better than you) I got curious as to the pros and cons of this modern day narcotic and did some digging.
My preliminary findings tell me that the two main functions off caffeine in the pharmaceutical business are as a cardiac stimulant and as
diuretic (i.e. makes you pee more). But we're more interested in the effects of it's daily use.
So just how addictive is this stuff?
"Caffeine is an addictive drug. Among its many actions, it operates using the same mechanisms that amphetamines, cocaine, and heroin use to stimulate the brain. On a spectrum, caffeine's effects are more mild than amphetamines, cocaine and heroin, but it is manipulating the same channels..." -

In other words if you need that caffeine boost in the morning you either have an uncontrollable urge to artificially create more urine (I know I do!) or
you're just stone cold hooked baby, yeah!
Predictably when it comes to the amount of caffeine per serving coffee is the undisputed winner. Tea only contains about 70% as much as coffee and cola drink trail with 25%. But since cola drinkers drink far more volume than coffee drinkers they remain the overall caffeine consumption winners.
So why does caffeine give you that extra kick that keeps you going? As it turns out it's because it's so similar to another chemical (
adenosine) produced by the brain that induces drowsiness and slows down neural activity. Our brain can't tell the difference between the two so once it's all laced up with caffeine the adenosine is ignored.
Since the adenosine isn't working your body reacts as if there is a problem and starts producing
adrenaline. So basically it's all a big mess at this point and you end up with constricted blood flow, muscle tension and an accelerated heart beat.
However the real problem with caffeine is in the long term use as is the case with most addictive substances. Once the adrenaline levels go down you get more tired than you would without caffeine and need to up the dosage to maintain your normal state of being. This also has the adverse effect of making you jumpy and irritable. And since it takes 12 hours for caffeine to be broken down and passed through the system you'll be unable to get proper
REM sleep due to the adenosine receptors being clogged up.
So all in all it has to be said that caffeine does a lot more harm than good and you'd probably be better off without it.
